Just got a can of IMR 4064 to try out w/ my .308 (Savage 10FP LE2, 1 in 10" twist) The IMR website lists: Starting at 41.5 gr. and max out at 45.6 gr . 45.6 sounds pretty hot! That's a pretty big difference from starting to max. I figure I will start with three loads 43.5 gr. , 44.0 gr. and...

I shoot a .308 Howa 1500 with a 20" tube and I like IMR-3031, IMR-4064, and Varget. I have used IMR 3031 the most with 130 and 150 grain bullets. I am transitioning more to the other two now though as I have more on hand. I have never been after "max" velocity with the .308, or use Barnes bullets, but I think you will see a few of these powders ... Perth to karara

Imr 4064 for 308

Hornady's 10th edition manual shows a load using IMR 4064 under 150 to 155 grain bullets in the 30-06 Springfield section but not the M1 Garand section. The starting load is 44.7gr using a COAL of 3.210" under their 155gr A-MAX and they list the top end as being 55.6gr. However, the latter calibers can utilize heavier bullets. In my rifle, the most accurate load is with the 75-grain Sierra hollow point and 39.0 grains of IMR 4064. That load routinely gives groups of 1 inch or less. Although some compilations of data might show slightly higher velocity for 117-grain loads, the load using IMR 4955 gave 2,758 fps. Agnus dei chant pdfIn a .308 I use 41.0 gr 4064 In 30-06 I use 47.5 gr. With my powder thrower adjusted properly, its no big feat to throw charges within +/- .2 gr, which isn't going to make much difference in a rifle load, and is only twice the accuracy tolerances of most scales anyhow. I've done some more load testing with the 168gr TMK, 42.7gr IMR 4064. My testing did confirm that 42.7gr was indeed an OCW charge. I then played with seating depth and found the right combo for my gun (OAL 2.870"). At the range this morning I shot a 3 shot group at 300yards that was 1-3/4 inches (outside to outside). The primary reason to use a faster powder than 4831 is not to load a light charge weight and get a lower velocity round, rather it is to use a normal powder charge weight, operate within a normal pressure/velocity range (something you cannot do with 4831 in the .308), and thru load development, find a sweet spot pressure/velocity-wise that your ...

IMR 4064 was THE powder for the .308 before Varget and ReLoader 15. It still works very well. I never found the temperature thing was a problem with 4064. I find little difference between 4064, Varget and Rldr 15 when accuracy or velocity is involved. 4064 is good stuff. The ball powders are much more temperamental. I'm using 4064 as fast I can afford to buy it, in .308. My '06 load was 47.4 under a Sierra or Hornady 168 HPBT match bullet. Shot great, I know another guy whose M1 settled into 1 MOA 5-round groups at 49 grains!!!

Some folks are seeing a little more velocity with RL15 than with Varget, but Varget is still less temperature sensitive–important if you’re running near max.

I believe IMR 4064 has been around quite a bit longer than Varget. Either are good powders. As is RL-15. In fact, there are MANY good powders for the .308 Win, and a guy could probably make himself crazy trying to figure out the very best one. Good Luck on that! Re: .308--IMR 4895 vs. IMR 4064? IMR 4895 is almost as good as Hodgen's 4895. Why? Hodgen 4895 has the same temp insinsitive properties as Varget, burns slightly faster, and meters jsut as good if not better, can be used equally good in 308, 5.56, and most other rifle battle and intermediete calibers in bolt or semi However, the latter calibers can utilize heavier bullets.
